The
Golden State Warriors face a crucial decision regarding
Jonathan Kuminga’s future as trade rumors swirl around the young forward. After a standout playoff performance, the organization appears to be leaning toward keeping him—at least for now.
How Jonathan Kuminga’s Playoff Breakout Changed the Golden State Warriors’ Plans
According to
Dean Simon of Sporting News, Jonathan Kuminga’s restricted free agency loomed as a major question mark after the Golden State Warriors’ second-round exit against the Minnesota Timberwolves. But his playoff surge may have shifted the team’s thinking.
In the five-game series, Kuminga averaged 20.8 points with a 63.5% true shooting percentage, showcasing his potential as a go-to scorer. His emergence came at the perfect time, forcing Golden State to reconsider his role moving forward.

According to
NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole, the Golden State Warriors are now more inclined to retain Kuminga. "Well, the tea leaves, as well as scuttlebutt around the NBA, is that the Warriors very likely will find a way to hang onto JK," Poole said on the Dubs Talk podcast. "(This) doesn't mean that he's going to be a long-term answer... they could just move him later." (H/t: Sporting News)
However, Poole also noted that even Kuminga’s supporters within the organization don’t view him as a franchise cornerstone.
Regular Season Struggles vs. Playoff Rise
Jonathan Kuminga’s 2024-25 regular season was a mixed bag:
- 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds per game
- 45.4% FG shooting (down from 52.9% the previous year)
- Missed 31 straight games due to an ankle injury
Despite these inconsistencies, his playoff performance reignited his value. Teams around the league have reportedly shown interest in a potential sign-and-trade, but the
Golden State Warriors may hold onto him for another season.
How Jonathan Kuminga Fits with the Warriors’ Core
If the Golden State Warriors keeps Jonathan Kuminga, he’ll join a revamped lineup featuring:
- Stephen Curry (4-time NBA champion)
- Jimmy Butler (6-time All-Star)
- Draymond Green (2017 Defensive Player of the Year)
His role could expand, especially if the Warriors prioritize youth alongside their veteran stars.
