Watermelons are a summer favourite fruit. They are juicy, sweet, super hydrating, and keep you full for a long time. And if you are a terrace gardener who is willing to try to grow it at home, and does not mind some extra maintenance and efforts, here are some steps.

From the market near you, buy a healthy red watermelon, plain green colour or the patterned type, and bring it home. Cut it open, eat the fruit, and save the seed.

Watermelons need space to grow, be it width or height. So make sure the pot or container you use is large, atleast 18 inches wide, and also 12-15 inches deep. And make sure it has good drainage below.

When it comes to soil, make sure to keep it a rich soil which can help the plant grow and bloom into fruit. Keep it a mix of garden soil, compost (cow dung or vermicompost), cocopeat, and some perlite.

Now the seeds that you put aside after eating the watermelon need to be scattered around the soil. Randomly scatter them over and then spread a thin layer of soil over the seeds again and pour water over it.

It is important to grow these watermelon plants on the terrace because they need a good 4-6 hours of sunlight, from germination to fruiting.

Till the seeds germinate, only water it once a day, and spray the soil with some water during the evening if it feels dry. And when you see 10-12 leaves per seedling, it is time to increase the water routine.

Watermelon grows in the form of vines, and they spread around fast. So try to add a bamboo trellis or pole to help it flow. It is not necessary to keep them vertical, you can also let them flow horizontally.
canva
Watermelons are heavy feeders, especially when the fruiting stage arrives, and giving it regular vermicompost or liquid-based fertiliser will help the plant grow faster. But make sure to not overdo it and stick to fertilising once a month.

As the plant grows further, you will see two kinds of flowers. Watermelon plant has yellow flowers, one of them will have a small fruit behind it, and the other won’t. So take the male flower (no fruit behind) and rub it over the female flower for pollination.
canva
Once the pollination is completed, the plant will take some more time to grow and you will see the fruits will turn bigger. On an average, it will take about 3-4 months for the Watermelon to be ready for harvest which is a much shorter time than it takes other fruits.
