If you are “looking for a man in finance, trust fund, 6'5", blue eyes”- look no further, at least when it comes to the height part. Tinder has ruffled a lot of feathers, as the news of its new height filter spread like a wildfire.
The dating app is quietly testing a new height filter feature, and it’s already caused a firestorm online. Found within the Premium Discovery section of Tinder’s settings, the filter allows users to set a minimum and maximum height range for potential matches — a move some say is long overdue, and others call outright discriminatory.
The update came to light after Reddit user @Extra_Barracudaaaa posted a screenshot with the caption: “Oh God. They add a height filter.” That post quickly gained traction, sparking debate across Reddit and X(formerly Twitter).
What Tinder says
The filter is currently being tested for Tinder Platinum subscribers, a top-tier subscription starting at £16.67/month. In a statement to MailOnline, a Tinder spokesperson confirmed the new tool is part of ongoing experiments to better tailor the user experience. “We're always listening to what matters most to our Tinder users — and testing the paid height preference is a great example of how we're building with urgency, clarity, and focus,” the spokesperson said.
Tinder’s Help Centre explains that Discovery is the section where users browse profiles and adjust preferences like age range, distance, and sexual orientation. While most of these settings have existed for years, Platinum users can now access even more detailed preferences — including height, number of profile photos, presence of a bio, and shared interests.
Still, Tinder insists these aren’t hard restrictions. “Preferences show you people who match your vibe, but won't limit who you see — you'll still be able to match with people outside of your selections,” Tinder says on its website.
Social media reactions
But while Tinder framed the height setting as just another customization tool, social media has been far less diplomatic.
One Twitter user quipped: “It’s over for short men. What are they going to do now?”
Another wrote: “this is why I have a love/hate relationship with @Tinder because I fundamentally disagree with these superficial initiatives and KNOW they will kill romance and the concept of love. but also as someone who is 5'7 and 5'8 on a good day I can appreciate the effort."
And one user even went and called Tinder out for its latest move, which they see as discriminatory: “TINDER TELLS IT LIKE IT IS: YOU MIGHT BE TOO SHORT FOR LOVE. Tinder just automated shallow dating by letting users filter out anyone under 6 feet before they even see them. Because nothing says ‘true love’ like algorithmic height discrimination. Next up: filters for credit scores, car models, and whether they put pineapple on pizza. Why waste time getting to know someone when you can eliminate them for being 5'11"?... Sorry short kings.”
Whether it’s seen as a tool for compatibility or just another layer of digital rejection, Tinder’s new height filter has certainly struck a nerve — and it’s not just short kings who are paying attention.
