Supriya Sule demands justice for Vaishnavi Hagawane in dowry harassment case
Pune: Nationalist Congress Party (SP) MP Supriya Sule on Wednesday demanded justice for Vaishnavi Hagawane, who committed suicide on May 16 at her house in Bhukum allegedly due to dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws.Vaishnavi's parents lodged a complaint with Bavdhan police, accusing her father-in-law Rajendra Hagawane, an office-bearer of Nationalist Congress Party-led by deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, her husband, and three others of dowry harassment and abetment of suicide.Pimpri Chinchwad police had already arrested the victim's husband, her mother-in-law, and sister-in-law. Sule said, "The case of Vaishnavi Hagawane's dowry death is deeply disturbing. One wonders how people can behave so cruelly. Given the marks of assault on her body, it is essential that an impartial investigation be conducted to determine whether it was murder or suicide.""It is clearly evident that she was brutally beaten. The chief minister and deputy chief minister of Maharashtra must personally intervene and ensure that the victim and her family receive justice," Sule said."Every individual involved in this heinous act — no matter who they are — must be punished with the harshest possible penalty.
I am doing everything in my power to ensure that Vaishnavi gets justice," Sule said.Deputy police commissioner Vishal Gaikwad of Pimpri Chinchwad police told TOI that the police on Wednesday produced the victim's husband, her mother-in-law, and sister-in-law before the court after the end of their custodial remand. The court extended their police custody for three days. "The woman's father-in-law and brother-in-law are still on the run. We have formed four teams to look for them."
