Alwar: A 32-year-old woman patient was allegedly raped by a nursing staff member in the surgical medical ICU of ESIC Medical College in Alwar earlier this week.
The accused, Subhash Ghithala, 30, has been picked up by Udyog Nagar police for questioning. He has been booked for molestation and rape, and further probe was underway, Udyog Nagar SHO Ajit Singh Badsara said.
The hospital administration has barred the accused from the premises and issued notices to the doctor and staff members on duty on the night of the crime, demanding their responses by Saturday morning. A committee has also been set up to conduct a detailed investigation, with its report due Saturday evening. The patient had been admitted on June 2 for a tubectomy. After the surgery on June 4, she was moved to the ICU, where the alleged crime was committed.
Two days later, her husband filed a complaint at Udyog Nagar police station on Friday, following which an FIR was registered and a probe launched.
In his complaint, the husband stated that around 11pm on June 4, a guard asked him to go to the waiting room. Between 1.30am and 2.30am, the guard and a male staffer on ICU duty told him that his wife was calling him due to the side effects of an injection.
After assisting his wife to sleep, he was sent out of the ICU by the staffer.
On June 5, when his wife regained full consciousness, she narrated to him her harrowing ordeal, revealing that a male staffer had drawn the curtains and sexually assaulted her which she was unable to resist. The husband then approached the police.
On June 6, the patient informed her attending doctor, Dr Deepika, about the horrifying episode, following which the accused was summoned to the ICU. In the presence of witnesses, he confessed to the crime.
