Story: After Rohan’s (Arjun Deswal) betrayal, Tanya discovers a mysterious app offering solace—but its dark secrets unravel her reality. As her world spirals, she must confront the app’s true nature and decide if saving their friendship is worth risking everything.
Review: Knock Knock…Kaun Hai? attempts to blend psychological thriller with Gen Z angst and digital-age dilemmas, but stumbles in execution despite a promising premise. Directed by Aniruddha Rajdherkar and written by Kamayani Vyas and Nikhil Vyas, the 16-episode series centers around Tanya (Aadhya Anand), a college student entangled in emotional turmoil and a mysterious app that grants sinister wishes. The show kicks off with a tantalizing setup—a reckless death wish triggers a string of blackmail and escalating violence—but soon devolves into a predictable and exaggerated narrative.
At its core, the series aspires to delve into the darker corners of young adult relationships and the lure of technology, but it barely scratches the surface. Characters, particularly Tanya, are underdeveloped and often behave in ways that feel more scripted for shock value than authentic to Gen Z experiences. Tanya’s emotional confusion and spiralling paranoia are meant to convey depth, but they ultimately come off as repetitive and directionless. Her arc becomes frustrating to follow, lacking growth or clarity.
The mystery element, centered around the Knock Knock app and its masked executor, initially hooks the viewer but is weighed down by a convoluted and bloated storyline. The show’s length (20–25 minutes over 16 episodes) stretches a thin plot, diluting its tension and impact. While there are intermittent spikes of intrigue, these moments are overshadowed by clichéd tropes and an over-reliance on melodrama.
Performances are mixed. Aadhya Anand brings a relatable charm to Tanya but is constrained by weak writing. Arjun Deswal’s portrayal of Rohan is passable, though one-dimensional. Kush Jotwani adds some freshness as the new guy Adheer, and his chemistry with Aadhya offers occasional relief. Mona Wasu lends credibility to the narrative as Tanya’s mother and an investigating officer, though her role remains peripheral.
Visually, the series doesn’t break new ground but stays serviceable. The background score by Bharatt-Saurabh complements the tone, and the title track “Koi Jaane Na” is catchy, though not particularly memorable. The depiction of college life feels detached from reality, relying on tired stereotypes of idle students and exaggerated Gen Z behaviour.
Knock Knock…Kaun Hai? is a classic case of wasted potential. While the premise had room for a sharp, tech-age thriller exploring the consequences of digital wish fulfilment, the show loses itself in melodrama, pacing issues, and an overlong narrative. With stronger character development and a tighter script, it could’ve been a standout. As it stands, it’s a passable watch only if you have time to spare—and low expectations.
