MYSORE: Thanks to narrow adjoining roads, Surya Bakery Circle in Hebbal Extension has turned into a nightmare for motorists and pedestrians during peak hours. The locals' repeated requests to the authorities concerned have fallen on deaf ears.
Many city buses and other company vehicles pass through Surya Bakery Circle, which connects to Hebbal Industrial Area.
During peak hours - both in morning and evening -- heavy traffic flow leads to jamming, and results in accidents at times.
The problem started after the parking of vehicles was allowed in 100-metre radius near circle while it was prohibited, says K V Shridhar, a resident of Hebbal and president of Navabharatha Nirmana Seva Trust.
He alleged that KSRTC buses, which ply to Hebbal Industrial Area and other areas, halt at the road junction, blocking the way of vehicles, which find it difficult to negotiate through the narrow road. "The problem will be solved if the buses are made to stop 50 metres away from the road junction," he suggested.
"The junction has witnessed many accidents. In spite of this, police have not deployed any personnel to manage traffic here," he alleged.
Senior citizen S Mahadeva Swamy, who is a regular at shops near the junction, complains that many shops have occupied footpath space for displaying products, inconveniencing pedestrians. "Shoppers park their vehicles haphazardly near the junction. Makeshift eateries on the footpath add to traffic problems," Swamy alleged.
When contacted, Cheluvegowda K T, corporator of Ward 27, said that traffic pile-up and the resulting inconvenience is because of a commercial building opposite to a bar. "A year ago, we had sent a proposal to Muda for its demolition, but nothing happened. The razing of the building is the only solution to ease traffic here," he felt.
When asked about the garbage strewn around the junction, the corporator blamed the shop owners for that, charging them with dumping waste on the road at night. "They don't dump waste at the place provided for it. However, MCC clears garbage on a daily basis," he claimed.
ACP (traffic) N Vishnuvardhana said that he is aware of the problem at the road junction, and how heavy traffic will be in evenings. "In order to lessen traffic pile-up in the evening, we are trying to shift makeshift eateries to another road. We will also deploy a constable to man traffic here," he said.
